If someone had told me that the best jerk chicken I would possibly ever have would be in Williams, Arizona, I would have laughed, accused them of lying to humanity and perhaps made a citizen’s arrest. But, believe it or not, the best jerk chicken I have possibly ever had was in Williams, AZ. I would not have believed it if I did not taste it myself. I will explain…
I have lived in New York City my entire life, and without getting into too much detail, have had a fair share of Caribbean food. A few years ago, one of my go-tos for jerk chicken, O’Fishole Seafood in Harlem, closed. My jerk chicken experiences since then have been hit and miss. But enough of the sad tale.
My wife and I were looking for a place to quickly grab food after driving to Williams from Las Vegas. Williams is about a one hour drive from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon where we would spend some time. The Little Chicken Spot had good reviews on Google Maps, so we gave it a shot. The first item on the menu was Jerk Chicken. Life Lessons: Something I have learned, and my father put words to years ago, was to stick with items on a menu that the restaurant will likely do well. For example, don’t order lobster from a pizza place. Beware of foods from a certain region of the planet when nobody from that region lives near the place you are ordering food from. I think you get the point.

When we arrived, the place was clearly not Caribbean and glazed jerk chicken was the first item on the menu. I wanted to try it, but had my suspicions about such a selection in Williams, AZ (no offense to the good people of Williams). I tried to discreetly ask the owner, who was taking the orders, where he was from. He said he was from the Bronx (New York City); I immediately felt more at ease selecting from the items on the menu. He commented that even people from the Caribbean had enjoyed his jerk chicken. We talked for a while about a couple of things, but most importantly the food passed the D.L. test and was absolutely delicious. D.L. Test: D.L. are the initials of a former co-worker of mine. Whenever he was offered food, before he would accept he would always ask, “Is it delicious?” I would always have to pause and give it serious thought. All future offers were thoroughly vetted. In addition to being perhaps the best jerk chicken I have ever had, it was one of the best meals I could remember in quite some time (minus those prepared by my wife of course). The owner is a really nice guy as well. If you find yourself in Williams, I highly recommend The Little Chicken Spot.
